O m\u00e9todo da diferen\u00e7a de densidade geralmente permite que o metal fundido seja mantido abaixo da temperatura de refino e do fluxo por um determinado per\u00edodo, permitindo que as inclus\u00f5es flutuem ou afundem, para que possam ser removidas. A velocidade de flutua\u00e7\u00e3o ou afundamento das inclus\u00f5es de esc\u00f3ria \u00e9 proporcional \u00e0 diferen\u00e7a de densidade entre ambas, inversamente proporcional \u00e0 viscosidade do metal fundido e proporcional ao quadrado do raio das part\u00edculas de esc\u00f3ria. Quando a temperatura do alum\u00ednio fundido \u00e9 baixa e o n\u00famero de inclus\u00f5es \u00e9 grande, a viscosidade do alum\u00ednio fundido \u00e9 elevada, e o tempo para que a esc\u00f3ria flutue ou afunde \u00e9 longo.
